Sun Peaks has come a long way in the 13 years since a Japanese company bought Tod Mountain outside the BC mining town of Kamloops. Lying as it does nearly four hours by road from Vancouver, it seemed an unlikely location for an international resort .

But Nancy Greene, the grande dame of Canadian skiing who won Olympic gold in Grenoble, was summoned to give her opinion on the terrain. “It took me rather less than 30 minutes to say 'yes',” she said. Nancy set about promoting newly-named Sun Peaks while owners the Nippon Cable Company stomped up CDN$ 225 million. The result is a delightful three-mountain ski area set around a well-designed purpose-built village with world-class accommodation.

Mountain

The skiing is suited to strong intermediates who will enjoy the mainly short but searching runs on Sundance and on Mount Tod. Advanced skiers will find plenty to keep them busy on steeper trails served by the Burfield quad. But the real excitement is the well-organised cat-skiing on the upper reaches of Mt Todd.

Novices and wobbly second-weekers will find their ski legs on Mount Morrisey, where the gentlest of scenic trails have been cut through the trees. Sun Peaks has a terrain park and a 100m half-pipe.
